Arthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects cats and dogs of all ages. Even young animals can suffer from arthritis. Factors other than aging can cause joint pain or problems, such as genetics or obesity. Arthritis can also develop after an accident that causes permanent injury or through intense and repetitive exercise.
Unfortunately, arthritis cannot be fully cured. The disease can be managed with treatments that relieve pain and slow the progression of the disease.
Your vet can recommend the best treatment for your pet’s arthritis and determine how often your animal should see the vet for follow-up. Frequently suggested treatments include adjusting your pet’s diet, ensuring they maintain a healthy weight, using painkillers or anti-inflammatories and trying acupuncture or physiotherapy.
Although symptoms or behaviours vary enormously between animals, here are some symptoms that could indicate that your pet is suffering from arthritis. However, please note that only a vet can confirm the diagnosis.
